How It Works

Four Steps from Implant to Reunion

  1. Implant

    Open one sterile package. The chip is already loaded in the single-use injector, and a licensed veterinary professional places it under the skin following the practice's normal protocol.

  2. Scan

    A compatible FDX-B reader, including PetScan, shows the 15-digit number. The included barcode labels carry the same number into the patient record.

  3. Register

    The owner scans the QR code on the included card and adds their contact details at Pet Registration and Recovery.

  4. Reunite

    After a found pet is scanned, staff contact the registry associated with its number. The registry uses the available owner or clinic record to help reach someone.

Common Questions

  • Is a pet microchip a GPS tracker?

    No. A pet microchip has no battery and does not broadcast a location. A reader energizes it at close range and reads its number, and the registry connects that number to the owner.

  • What does "pre-registered" mean?

    Each TraqPaw chip number is associated with your clinic before shipment. At the visit, the owner uses the included card to add their contact information through Pet Registration and Recovery.

  • What if the owner never registers the chip?

    The clinic association provides another contact route. Your practice may be able to help if the chip number matches a patient record with current owner contact details.

  • Do microchipped pets really get home more often?

    Yes. A 2009 study at 53 shelters found higher median return-to-owner rates for microchipped strays: 52.2% versus 21.9% for dogs and 38.5% versus 1.8% for cats, compared with all strays. Current registration details help a shelter connect the number to an owner.

  • Which size should we stock?

    Start with the standard TraqPaw (2.1 x 12 mm) for dogs and cats, and add TraqPaw Micro (1.2 x 8.3 mm) where a smaller implant is the better fit.

  • Will other clinics and shelters be able to read a TraqPaw chip?

    With a compatible reader, yes. TraqPaw uses the low frequency FDX-B format defined by ISO 11784 and 11785. Check that the reader supports FDX-B to read its 15-digit identification number.

  • Which reader do we need?

    PetScan (URH-2 ISO) for routine chairside scans over USB. The URH-300HP-ISO adds read range for larger animals. Both read TraqPaw and compatible FDX-B chips; the HP model also supports HDX.

  • Where do we buy TraqPaw?

    Through Patterson Veterinary, Midwest Vet, or Covetrus by part number, or direct from UID. The standard TraqPaw is also sold online in boxes of 10.
